The Power of the Heart’s Electromagnetic Field

This article is a continuation and expansion of the Heart Math Institute’s original article “The Energetic Heart is Unfolding” applied to Reiki healing treatments, in my humble knowledge and experience.  I’d love if you continue this discussion by placing comments or questions at the bottom of this

“The heart, like the brain, generates a powerful electromagnetic field, McCraty explains in The Energetic Heart. “The heart generates the largest electromagnetic field in the body. The electrical field as measured in an electrocardiogram (ECG) is about 60 times greater in amplitude than the brain waves recorded in an electroencephalogram (EEG). Furthermore, the magnetic field produced by the heart is more than 5,000 times greater in strength than the field generated by the brain, and can be detected a number of feet away from the body, in all directions, using SQUID-based magnetometers” 🙂

How Reiki Energetic Healing Works

Last week after a Reiki session, my client asked me if I always place my fingers on the heart chakra. I answer yes, because everyone needs some help on our heart chakra. She felt that there was a special flow of energy through her heart chakra. Then she told me she had some pain in the middle of her chest cause by stress. I did not know any of this. The “Energy” goes where IT is needed without the need for the Reiki practitioner to knowing where the energetic unbalance is. That is a good Reiki session!

Reiki is an energy balancing hands-on healing practice. What Reiki, the intelligent Energy present in all living things, does is restore the natural-normal electromagnetic energetic fields balance of our energy centers or chakras.

Energy healing is a subtle, yet measurable, form of holistic healing. “Aura”, “chakras” are just names given to this intelligent energy that in the past we could not explain before on other understandable words. Nowadays we can measure the energetic fields from our hearts and brains.

Look at the picture on your right and remember that we are interchanging energy with other people ALL the time!!!

Some of you might now I’m a curious electronics engineer. I love and understand how electricity, magnetism and electromagnetic fields work. I was fascinated by these “unseen” yet scientific phenomena since i was a kid. My father was also an electronics engineer who made this love for electricity and magnetism sprout and grow.

The conclusions I came up with are (with the help of other magnificent practitioners):

  • when a person have her/his energetic fields centers (chakras) un-balanced (by emotional challenges and other causes)
  • an energy medicine practitioner, through placing her/his hands on or near the energetic centers (chakras) of our bodies, affect-modify  in a positive, natural, non disrupting-disturbing way, those subtle electro-magnetic fields
  • during this process of getting back to energetic balance, the person receiving the Reiki session usually feels some sensations inside her/his body
  • some of these Reiki sessions experiences are exemplified on the video testimonials in my site:
    Reiki Session Experiences Video Testimonials
  • when I say “Reiki practitioner” Reiki session” I mean Reiki AND any other modalities of energy work
  • we have many energetic centers on our bodies. The most important and powerful ones are along our spine; they are commonly named chakras

“Practices such as therapeutic touch, holoenergetic healing, healing touch, chi gong and reiki among others “are based upon the assumption that an exchange of energy occurs to facilitate healing,” according to the findings. “While there exists scientific evidence to substantiate the physiological and psychological effects of many of these treatments, science has as yet not been able to describe a mechanism by which this putative energy exchange between individuals takes place. This study, together with the work of (other research) … represents one of the first successful attempts to directly measure an exchange of energy between people.”

“Through the use of tools and technologies that foster positive emotions and psychophysiological coherence, individuals can effectively initiate a repatterning process, whereby habitual emotional patterns underlying stress are replaced with new, healthier patterns that establish increased emotional stability, mental acuity, and physiological efficiency as a new familiar baseline or norm,” that was according to the paper Emotional Stress, Positive Emotions, and Psychophysiological Coherence. The paper, written by IHM researchers McCraty and Dana Tomasino comprised a chapter in the 2006 book, Stress in Health and Disease, published by Wiley-VCH.”

“The idea that an energy exchange of some type occurs between individuals is a central theme in many healing techniques. This concept has often been disputed by Western science due to the lack of a plausible mechanism to explain the nature of this energy or how it could affect or facilitate the healing process. The fact that the heart generates the strongest electromagnetic field produced by the body, coupled with the recent discovery that this field becomes more coherent as the individual shifts to a sincerely loving or caring state prompted us to investigate the possibility that the field generated by the heart may significantly contribute to this energy exchange.

We present a sampling of results which provide intriguing evidence that an exchange of electromagnetic energy produced by the heart occurs when people touch or are in proximity. Signal averaging techniques are used to show that one’s electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is registered in another person’s electroencephalogram (EEG) and elsewhere on the other person’s body. While this signal is strongest when people are in contact, it is still detectable when subjects are in proximity without contact.

This study represents one of the first successful attempts to directly measure an energy exchange between people, and provides a solid, testable theory to explain the observed effects of many healing modalities that are based upon the assumption that an energy exchange takes place. Nonlinear stochastic resonance is discussed as a mechanism by which weak, coherent electromagnetic fields, such as those generated by the heart of an individual in a caring state, may be detected and amplified by biological tissue, and potentially produce measurable effects in living systems. One implication is that the effects of therapeutic techniques involving contact or proximity between practitioner and patient could be amplified by practitioners consciously adopting a sincere caring attitude, and thus introducing increased coherence into their cardiac field.”
